LANGUAGES AND ARTS: THE QUESTION OF QUALITY IN HIGHER EDUCATION IN A SOCIETY ENGAGED IN A PROCESS OF ACCELERATED CHANGE

This work resulted from a study of Languages and Arts areas. It is part of a wider research project that was developed during the period of 1998- 2003, entitled The question of quality in Higher Education in a society engaged in a process of accelerated change: the meaning, critical revision and proposals for its development. Having as its obligatory point of reference the contemporary socio-cultural context of which the areas of knowledge referred to above are an integral part, its main purpose is to investigate the educational quality of the same areas. The study’s subjects were renowned national and international professionals in the two areas, and also teachers and students of the courses offered by a private university in São Paulo state in the same areas. During 2003, interviews were made with 12 well-known professionals and questionnaires were applied to teachers and students of PUC-Campinas in both areas. The collected data of 2000 graduating students were used to compare those ones collected during the year of 2003. The results indicate that the opinions of the students, teachers and famous professionals presented a few divergences, which will certainly bring useful suggestions to both areas of higher education.
