Abstract

When Kant was professor at the University of Königsberg, pedagogical disciplines were secondary and no specific professors were assigned to teach them. Faculty members took turns lecturing lessons on Pedagogy. Immanuel Kant was assigned to give these lectures in 1776/1777, 1783/1784, and 1786/1787. His book “On Pedagogy”, which is analyzed in this article, originated during these lectures. The book ranges between an exposition of principles and statements on practical advice. It is a concise piece of work associated with his moral investigations. The aim of the article is to investigate how, according to Kant, the betterment of human nature occurs through education, discipline being imperative for such purpose, which in turn is not in disagreement with freedom. The objective of this article is to analyze Kant’s proposition of practical education as stated in his work “On Pedagogy”. For this purpose, along with Kant’s work, studies of scholars
on the German philosopher will be used as reference.
