This article is an attempt to contribute to the consolidation of sustainable development as a rule of law. In this sense, it aims to demonstrate the indispensability of a consistent normative and axiological reasoning, especially for a legal construction highly vulnerable to interpretations that restricts its meaning and compromise its practical force. For this purpose, as will be seen, the legality of sustainable development, an ethical-normative concept, is based on the notion of human dignity and derives its strength and virtue as legal principle from it. Accordingly, it is possible to find the normativity of sustainable development within Brazilian law, thus awarding the concept systemic conditions to function as a legal principle.
