Mobility is an attribute of modern society that has been celebrated in the fields of architecture, urbanism and urban planning for a century. This article examines the ideal of mobility in the light of the possibility of collective autonomy of urban dwellers in the production of space, especially on a local and microlocal scale. For this reason, some discussions from the second half of the twentieth century are resumed, such as Thompson’s study on the transformation of
time lived into abstract time, the critique of abstract mobility by situationists, and the critique of this critique by Guy Debord, Henri Lefebvre and others. Resuming these discussions allows us to understand mobility dialectically, i.e., also as constituting a form of alienation.
