Abstract

There are few studies on the origins of the concept of “materialization of light”, a type of artistic/architectural proposal, in which space and light come together, intimately affecting the perception, experience and participation of the spectator in relation to the environment. In this sense, this article seeks to contribute not only by going through the ideas and practices related to the use of light as an art object and/or architectural element from the 1960s onwards, but mainly by provoking a reflection on the relationship between materialized light and space, and between materialized light and the subjects. The present work brings a bibliographic review based on Butterfield, Didi-Huberman, Merleau-Ponty and Robert Morris, revisiting the proposals of “Light and Space”, a movement started in the 1960s that sought to elevate the experience in relation to the materiality of light. This movement represented not only a response given by important names in art and architecture, such as Dan Flavin, James Turrell, Robert Irwin and Larry Bell to the ideals of the time of juxtaposing technology, art, synesthetic perception and the full experience of the subject, but also an expansion of the role of the sensitive perception of the subject-perceiver, which ceases to be something external arising from the work, to be the very compositional element of the artistic and architectural space.
