Abstract

A Station Area can be the basis of spatial tensions between a Transport Node and a Place, but it may also be considered as a strategic point for urban structuring and spatial transformation of territory: a Mobility Urban Hub. This can be understood as a Place that interconnects simultaneously several urban scales and modes of transport without spatial ambivalences; concentrates and radiates multiple urban activities and functions; and articulates stakeholders in the planning process. In this way, this paper investigates the physical-spatial relationships between a Transport Node and Place, highlighting aspects of Urban Design from the case study of the Central Station of Utrecht, through categories developed in a Transport and Urban scope. The results show, on one hand, spatial dilemmas and challenges between Node and Place; and on
another, a set of design guidelines aimed at enhancing the areas of the stations as a Mobility Urban Hub.
