CONCEPT AND METHOD: AN ANALISIS OF THE EUROPAN COMPETITION FOR OSDORP, NETHERLANDS

The Europan competitions created in 1988 stimulate the debate on architectonical and
urban matters about new housing and forms of urbanity. Although they have been held for
only two decades, this competition has already accumulated enough history that allows us to analyse the quality of the projects and the innovative ideas that presided them. The first
Europan was the result of the extension, to all Europe, of the Programme d’Architecture
Nouvelle French competitions. The Programme d’Architecture Nouvell has as the main idea promoting the architectural and urban debate through the impementation of innovative projects designed by young architects. The PAN were also presented as an avant-garde instrument that contests the results from modern architecture in European cities — in the same period, the most important critics on modern architecture were published, such as: Death and life of great American cities, The architecture of the city and Learning from Las Vegas. This paper intends to present the Europan competition and its concepts, and analyses the winning project for Osdorp, Netherlands.
