Call for Papers: XVII International Seminar on Urban Planning Research (SIIU)
The next issue of the Oculum Ensaios Journal will feature original works produced from the debates held at the XVII International Seminar on Urban Planning Research (SIIU).
Initiated in 2007 at the Departament d’Urbanisme i Ordenació del Territori (DUOT) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), the event expanded its reach after its first three editions to include other universities. Since then, the SIIU has established itself as a space to present and debate the most relevant themes in the field of urbanism, bringing together research results, professional practices, and public policies focused on planning and territorial interventions.
In its XVII edition, in 2025, the SIIU was hosted by the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain) and the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (Brazil), reaffirming its commitment to internationalization and intercontinental collaboration. The meetings in both countries maintained their focus on concrete problems derived from everyday reality, addressing urban conditions at different scales, from the urban level to the territorial level. The seminar acted as a space for the exchange of experiences and as a catalyst for partnerships and collaborative networks among the participants.
In addition to promoting the exchange of ideas, the event encourages the production of joint publications and strengthens social cohesion through meetings that value dialogue and integration. Over nearly two decades, the large volume of articles presented has revealed a common research agenda among participants from different countries, without disregarding the specificities of each context. These studies have been widely disseminated through proceedings, scientific journals, and books, demonstrating the vitality and relevance of the debates promoted by the various SIIUs. Furthermore, recent discussions show an unexpected convergence among researchers from different continents, while maintaining respect for the plurality of proposed solutions, contextualized by local particularities. This reflects how global problems, especially those related to urban issues, unequivocally impact various regions and demand new disciplinary approaches to address contemporary crises, considering the nuances or contrasts encountered.
Thus, this special issue of the Oculum Ensaios Journal aims to disseminate the impact of the discussions that took place throughout the event, inviting authors of presented works to adapt them to the journal's editorial format, as original articles not submitted to another periodical, in accordance with the respective template provided — noting that the article's title page must include the information "Dossier XVII International Seminar on Urban Planning Research (SIIU)" — and to submit them according to its guidelines. All articles will be evaluated anonymously by two reviewers and must maintain the same content submitted to the SIIU, while being adapted to the journal's format. In addition to articles originating from the XVII SIIU, the Oculum Ensaios Journal may receive submissions strictly related to the themes discussed at the event: 1. City (urban forms and their components), 2. Territory (expanded field of urbanism and its scales), 3. Landscape (expanded field of urban studies), and 4. Cross-cutting themes (urban studies and contemporary issues). Due to the international nature of the event and the Oculum Ensaios Journal, works submitted in Portuguese, once approved, must be submitted by the authors in another language (Spanish or English) for bilingual publication, according to the journal's procedures. Likewise, articles submitted in their original English or Spanish version, once approved, must be submitted by the authors in their Portuguese version.
Special Editors: Jane Victal Ferreira, Vera Santana Luz and Melisa Pesoa Marcilla
Submission Deadline: January 20, 2026, to March 15, 2026
