Resumo

O endotélio vascular é uma camada de células finas que reveste a superfície terminal de todos os vasos sanguíneos. Atualmente observa-se que sua função não é de simples barreira de difusão passiva entre os elementos do sangue circulante e o tecido intersticial. O endotélio intacto provê uma interface não trombogênica entre o vaso e os componentes sanguíneos, favorece a vasodilatação em diferentes condições de nuxo e estresse parietal, além de promover reparos nas áreas lesadas. Sua integridade é essencial a regulação do fluxo sanguíneo e proteção contra a trombólise. O endotélio pode ser considerado o maior órgão paracrino do organismo, que responde a vários estímulos, produzindo e secretando localmente grande número de compostos metabolicamente ativos, que atuam nas células vizinhas. O objetivo deste trabalho é expor conceitos modernos deste importante sistema orgânico.
