Abstract

Objective

To study the prevalence of chronic pain in the university outpatient clinic of physiotherapy of the Universidade Estadual Paulista, Presidente Prudente, SP, Brazil portraying multidimensional aspects of pain using the McGi/1 questionnaire adapted for the Portuguese language.

Methods

Two-hundred patients were interviewed by standard questionnaire. The information

were col/ected and input in the spreadsheet Excel and analyzed.

Results

The prevalence of chronic pain was present in 48.0% of the evaluated persons (n=96), where 67. 7% were women. The most frequent age group was of 61 to 70 years of age, the majority being retired (42.7%) and married (54.2%). The most common cause was arthrosis (33.3%). The women had more pain (OR=2.86; IC=1.60-5.1O) and less education.

Conclusion

Chronic pain was present in roughly half of the patients seen in clinica/ practice but they were not always referred since preference was given to acute pain complaints. The specialties where pain was more prevalent were orthopedics due to arthrosis and other illnesses of the musculoskeletal system. Research of chronic pain should be attentive and oriented in the services in arder to institute better therapy.
