Abstract

Understanding taste alterations is relevant for identifying other diseases or health problems when SARS-CoV-2 infection and antineoplastic treatment are excluded. Thus, it is necessary for health professionals to know how to recognize diseases that are associated with changes in taste, when infection due to the coronavirus is ruled out. Searches were carried out in PubMed, MedLine and SciELO databases, using the descriptors: “Ageusia” and “Dysgeusia”, limiting the search period between the years 2017 to 2021. Original articles in English were included. The data obtained were submitted to a simple quantitative analysis, selecting the abstracts relevant to this review. Articles that related such changes in taste to the coronavirus and anticancer treatment were excluded. Six studies were selected from the 61 found, which together analyzed a total sample of 573 individuals. The metallic taste was the most frequently reported taste alteration, whereas the sweet taste was the most easily detected by the individuals tested, with greater ease of perception among the female population. Most individuals report that the frequency with which this symptom appears is daily, but the duration of symptom persistence is not described. It is necessary to understand taste changes in the context of other diseases, when coronavirus is excluded.
