Abstract

A reslropective analysis of 323 palients submitted to
transuretltralresect ion of the prost ate (TURP) , from January 1989 until January 1993 (a four years period), was reatized based on the removal of the Foley catheter on the first day post operative. Comparing the urological literature of TURP, where the Foley catheter is normally removed after three days of the surgical procedure, there is no difference in this studies concerning complications, symptoms and post
operative convalescence. Tlterefore, it was possible to
decrease the hospital stay to 2, 5 days and reduce also the costs of hospitalization. It is conclued that early removal of the Foley catheter on the first pos operative day reduces the morbidity and also reduces the hospital dues.
