Abstract

evaluated by mean, standard deviation and then compared by Qui-squared and Student-t tests. Overweihgt women were older and had high parity. They had, also, clinical and obstetric history worse than patients that had weight between 80-99. They had high prevalence of clinical diseases (45.2%) and obstetric complications (37.8%). One half of overweight patients had got more than 20 kg and the body mass index was, on avarage, over 40 kg/m2. These patients had high incidence of hypertensive disease (37.9%), diabetes (10.0%), infectious disease (8.2%) and cesarean section was the most frequent form of labor (48.3%). Among overweight patients, there was high incidence of premature infants (8.0%) and neonatal depression. The weight mean among newborn infants was 116 g higher and one third of them were big for gestational age. Pregnancy in overweight patients had high risk and should be evaluated in specialized centers that could give them adequate obstetric, anesthetic and neonatal assistance.
