Abstract

Short stature is a common complaint in pediatric and endocrinology offices due to parents' anxiety regarding the social and economic success of their children. The diagnosis and management of growth disorders in children responsive to Growth Hormone therapy have been expanded, but some indications remain controversial, especially regarding cost/benefit analysis. The use of Growth Hormone for children with clear deficiency is well accepted. However, its use in children who do not have this laboratory-proven dysfunction is currently being discussed. This review emphasizes the management of children with short stature due to endocrinological disorders, from the first consultation, as well as diagnostic methods, differential diagnoses, evaluation and treatment, including indications for hormonal therapy with recombinant Growth Hormone.
