Abstract

goal
The purpose of this article was to verify the nosology of eyelid trauma in a University Hospital.
Methods
A retrospective study was carried out on patients with eyelid trauma treated at the Emergency Room of the Faculty of Medicine of Botucatu, Universidade Estadual Paulista, from 1995 to 2000. 206 patients with eyelid trauma were evaluated, studying: age, sex, date, time, complaint, eyelid examination, laterality, affected eyelid, type and cause of trauma, treatment and medical follow-up performed.
Results
Men between 20 and 39 years old, suffering from blunt or penetrating trauma resulting from car accidents, were the most prevalent. In 58.33% of cases there was concomitant eye injury. Most patients were treated medically.
Conclusion
Blunt, bipalpebral, unilateral trauma was the most frequent, with the eyes being affected in most cases, which points to the need for ophthalmological examination in eyelid trauma and the use of efficient preventive measures.
