Cardiovascular evaluation of obese and Non-obese sedentary children

Objective
Sociogenic obesity in childhood and adolescence, whose prevalence has increased significantly in the last two decades, is considered by many authors to be a serious epidemiological problem. This is deserving increasing attention from those responsible for public health control. Concerned with this issue, the present work intends to demonstrate a new facet of the problem.
Methods
Sedentary obese children (n = 10 with a mean age of 9 ± 0.7 years old) were compared with non-obese, sedentary children (n = 10 with a mean age of 9 ± 0.2 years old), as cardiovascular functional aspects, studied at rest and during dynamic physical exercise.
Results
The results revealed significant differences between the groups, notably in the greater number of heartbeats during rest and the lower physical capacity on the part of the sedentary obese, the latter being expressed in metabolic equivalents with 5.1 ± 1.8 for the sedentary obese. and 8.1 ± 2.7 for sedentary non-obese. Also notable was the difference in oxygen consumption values (V02mUkg/min), of 17.8 ± 6.5 and 28.3 ± 9.7 respectively, for sedentary obese and sedentary non-obese individuals, values obtained indirectly, during the execution of dynamic physical exercise, at the moment they reached the pre-established sub-maximal heart rate.
Conclusion
Such results can alert the community against early obesity, which brings damage and overload to the cardiovascular system, causes cardio-respiratory functional limitation and, from childhood, can be a risk factor for diseases related to this system.
