Abstract

Objective

To estimate the prevalence of obesity in 6 to 8 year old children by three anthropometric criteria, to compare gender and age percentages, and to observe prognosis percentage and agreement of the body mass index methods during the studied period.

Methods

A longitudinal study was carried out in 881 schoolchildren attending public schools between 2000 and 2001. The children were classified by their weight! height, according to the World Health Organization standard reference, and Must's & Cole's cutoff points for the Body Mass lndex. Data were analyzed to report the prevalence, prognosis, and rates of agreement.

Results

The prevalence of obesity for boys varied from 3.2% to 14.4% and for girls 6. 1 % to 22. 7%; the correct prognosis rates were always higher than 75. 0%; agreement rates were equal to ar higher than 93.0%, and Kappa test revea/ed agreement rates from "good" to "optimum ". The prevalence of obesity among girls showed marked differences, mainly when comparing Must's criteria with the others'. The correct prognosis rates varied from 48. 0% to 91.7%, and agreement rates were higher than 86.0%.

Conc/usion

These criteria estimated different prevalence in boys and girls [ar} genders. The concordances and prognostic agreements, regardless of the criteria used, had a better performance in boys, and confirmed the results found in the literature. The agreements and concordances showed to be /ower in early ages, mainly in girls.
