Abstract

Objetive

The objective of this study was to find out the rate of adhesion to the follow-up procedure after occupational and non-occupational (sexual violence) exposure.

Methods

A retrospective study was conducted involving 1 580 health care workers and 378 victims of sexual violence attending a Brazilian University Hospital from May 1997 to March 2001.

Results

The results revealed that 7.2% of the health care workers and 19.2% of the victims of sexual violence used post-exposure anti-retroviral prophylaxis. Of these, 50.8% of the health care workers and 47. 1 % of the victims of sexual violence did not complete the fo/low up, 60. 0% of the health care workers interrupted the fol!ow up prematurely (before the 6-week return). Adherence to fol!ow-up was low and similar in both groups.

Conclusion

Establishing a good relationship with the group, more f/exible schedules for the return visits and fast recai/ programs of absentees could improve these rates.
