Abstract

Objectíve
The discrimination of lexical units as words or pseudowords has been used to help understand the process of reading and writing. In the present study, the discriminaüon of words/pseudowords correIated with age, school grade and parents' education level in 120 (8- to 11-year-old) children with no history of
neurological or psychtatric problems.
Methods
The methods comprised medical history, neurological examination, accuracy and reaction time of WP discrimination, a test of school performance, and the Raven test
Results
More correct identifications and reduced reaction times were found for true words than for pseudowords, Children in the third through fifth grades could
correctly idenüfy more pseudowords than those in the second grade. The reaction time for both kinds of lexical units decreased as the children progressed in school.
Parents with higher education level associated with better recognition of the non-word nature of pseudowords
Conclusion
The evaluation of lexical units as words or pseudowords may bring knowledge on evolution and the mechanisms invoIved in the development of reading.
