Abstract

Objective

To investigate the nutritional status of iron in young people living in a religious boarding educational institution.

Methods

Fifty-six students with ages ranging from 14 to 24 years were within the inclusion criteria and accepted to participate in the study, ar received their parents·consent if they were younger than 18 years; 40 were female and 16 were ma/e. Fui/ blood test, serum ferritin, serum iron, transferrin saturation índex and total iron-binding capacity were analyzed to determine the nutritional status of iron in the participants.

Results

Seventy percent of the subjects exhibited anemia while 28% presented normal blood parameters. Thirty-eight percent of the participants presented iron deficiency anemia.

Conclusion

The students of this institution presented a high incidence of iron deficiency anemia, especially females. We recommend that imposed vegetarian diets served in educational institutions are adequately balanced in arder to promote health.
