Menstrual Dignity of Buddhist Nuns

Menstruation, although a physiological phenomenon, is handled as a social taboo because of cultural norms which are often under influence of religions, and which can encourage behaviors and practices that lead to the exclusion and discrimination of menstruating people around the world. Through bibliographic research we will address the Buddhist perspective on menstruation and menstrual dignity based on the normative ode of female monasticism. Initially we will make a brief presentation of the situation of women in India when the historical Buddha lived, in order to present the context in which the monastic female precepts were established. The precepts related to menstruation and menstrual hygiene will be presented according to the Vinaya Sūtra (Vinaya Sutta) and we will examine some possible interpretations about the reasons for establishing these norms. Finally, we will pose some possible dialogues between the problem of menstrual poverty in Brazil and the menstrual behavior laid down by the Buddhist monastic code.
