Abstract

The belief in individual effort as the cause of academic success is widespread. Both schools and families are fundamental agents in education, but instead of acting for that purpose, they look for culprits when the student has school problems. This study investigated, through the Bioecological Theory of Human Development, structured interviews with open questions, and subsequent content analysis, how the school failure process produced relationships between parents, students, and teachers and how these relationships changed over time. Failure produced parental reactions such as fights, punishment, and disappointment. Teachers complained that parents did not care or spend time on their children’s education, evidencing the absence of Proximal Processes, which favored the school failure of students with more difficulties. These results show the importance of the home-school Mesosystem and the family in the education of children.
