Abstract

The levels of vitamin A in human milk seem to reflect their proportion in the diet and the maternal nutritional status of this nutrient. Taking into account the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency among different population groups in our midst, the objective of this study was to assess the influence of age, socioeconomic condition and diet on the concentrations of vitamin A in mature human milk. The study included 74 healthy nursing mothers, aged 14 —39 years, who exclusively breast-fed their infants in the period between 30 days and 3 months post-delivery. The participating mothers were classified in three groups: Low socioeconomic level adolescents; Low socioeconomic level adults, and high socioeconomic level adults. The anthropometric nutritional status was determined by the Body Mass Index and the alimentary survey was performed using the 24 hour recall. The sampling of maternal milk was done in the afternoons, by manual expression, from both breasts, consisting in several extractions until two hours after breastfeeding session. The minimum volume obtained was 100 ml.
