Abstract

Rhabdomyosarcomas are malignant neoplasms of skeletal muscle, histologically subdivided into embryonic or botryoid, alveolar and pleomorphic. These tumors recapitulate fetal myogenesis, a factor responsible for the immense variety of presentations, which range from extremely primitive to well-differentiated forms. To detect neoplastic rhabdomyoblasts (determining for the diagnosis), it is necessary to use immunohistochemistry, with antibodies specific to striated muscle antigens, such as myoglobin. Its most common appearance until the second decade of life, being more prevalent in males and Caucasians, is most frequently located in the head and neck, followed by the genitourinary tract. Signs, symptoms and prognosis are site-dependent. Metastases are common to regional lymph nodes, lungs, bones and, more rarely, bone marrow.
