Resumen

Realizou-se revisão bibliográfica em periódicos nacionais e internacionais  indexados, com o propósito de selecionar uma série de estudos sobre a associação entre asma e obesidade em adolescentes. Os artigos foram pesquisados nas bases de dados Medline, SciELO e Lilacs a partir das palavras-chave obesidade, asma e adolescentes. Foram selecionados aqueles publicados entre os anos de 1980 a 2006, e também foram incluídos os primeiros estudos que investigaram esta associação em anos anteriores Na maioria dos estudos transversais realizados, foi encontrada relação entre asma e obesidade em adolescentes, ou seja, os adolescentes que apresentavam sintomas de asma estavam com sobrepeso ou obesidade. Muitos estudos apontaram relação significativa no sexo feminino e menor frequência para o sexo masculino, mas sem causa específica. Existem evidências da relação entre obesidade e asma em crianças e adultos; na fase de transição (adolescência) as evidências se contradizem, apontando o sexo corno provável modificador de efeito.
