Risk factors associated with cellular alterations induced by the human papilloma virus in the uterine cervix

Objective
To evaluate risk factors associated with cytologícal alterations induced by the cervical human papilloma virus, in a cancer comprehensive center.
Methods
One hundred and two patients were included in this study, divided into two groups: with and without lesions induced by the human papil loma virus. Diagnosis
of cell alterations was achieved using the Papanicolaou smear, colposcopy and biopsy. Sixteen cytomorphological criteria were analyzed. Koilocytosis was the most frequently found alteration. Extrinsic and intrinsic factors were analyzed such as: the use of oral contraceptives, condoms, number of sexual partners and
leucorrhea were analyzed using univariate and multivariate regression models. The odds ratio and confidence interval were also calculated.
Results
For the univariate analysis, the presence of cell alterations was ínfluenced by the prolonged use of oral contraceptives, condoms, alcohol use, puru}ent cervical
discharge and the existence of more than three sexual partners. The multivaríate
analysis showed that women with more than three sexual partners presented a
greater risk of injury (OR=2.80; Ci=1.12-6.99) and the condom users presented a
reduced risk (OR=0.31; CI=0,10-0.90)
Conclusíon
The number of sexual partners and the use of condoms were associated with the human papilloma virus cervical cell alterations as an increased risk and as a protectíve factor, respectively.
