Abstract

Objective
The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of nutritional status, waist
circumference and family history of hypertension on blood pressure levels of adolescents.
Methods
A cross-sectional study was canied out with adolescents aged 12-20 years. Nutritional
status was assessed through body mass index and waist-ciKumference. Blood pressure
levels were assessed through criteria proposed in the IV Brazilian Guidelines for Arterial
Hypertension. The adolescents were asked whether their parents or any of their relatives
were hypertensive.
Results
A total of 347 adolescents were assessed, 28.5% girls and 71,5'’/, boys. We found
significantly increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels in overweight
individuaIs of both genders. Mean systolic and diastolíc blood pressure levels were
significantly higher in boys. Among girls, higher mean systolic blood pressure levels
were found in those with excess visceral fat, determined by waist circumference. it was
not possibfe to determine if family history of hypertension or parental blood pressure
influenced the blood pressure levels of the adolescents.
Conclusion
Blood pressure levels in adolescents were influenced by excess weight and visceral fat.
It is important to prevent adolescents from becoming overweight in order to reduce
the incÊdence of hypertension in this population
