Abstract

Objective
This study presents the reIiability and validity of University of Rhode Island Change Assessment - 24 short-form for tobacco users.
Method
An instrumental study was conducted by Brazilian adaptation and validation of the instrument.
Results
University of Rhode Island Change Assessment reliabilities according to Cronbach's alpha are: Pre-contemplation (q=O.5548), Contemplatíon (a=0.7823), Action
(a=0.8054), and Maintenance (u=0.7961). The concurrent validity proved to be satisfactory. with highly significant positive correlations between University of Rhode
Island Change Assessment Readiness to Change and the Readiness Ruler (p=0,007), and low intensity (r=O. 396). The level of readiness to change was also assessed by the
equation: Contemplation + Action + Maintenance - Pre-contemplation = Total Readiness.
Conclusion
Another evidence of validity came from the experimental outcomes, in which significant differences occurred between pre- and post-motivational group intervention scores. The T score was built from statistical analyses, normalizing the
Brazilian University of Rhode Island Change Assessment for tobacco users. Outcomes show an instrument with good psychometric properties, and more broadly, an instrument that can assist smoking intewention programs.
