Abstract

Objective
This study assessed the correlation between nutritiona! status and blood pressure in adolescents.

Methods
This retrospective. cross-sectional study anaíyzed the medical records of adolescents aged 10 to 17 years who visited a specialized center between 1997 and 2006. The adolescents' body mass indices were calculated and their baseline systolic
and diastolic blood pressures were converted into percentiles. Spearman's correlation was used for the statisticaÊ analysis, Values of p<0.05 were considered significant.

Results
The medical records of 983 adolescents aged lnears wermi. Of the 506 females and 477 males, 46.440% and 37,53CJ%respectively, were overweight ar obese. Overweight and obese adolescents were mostly in the higher systolíc
and diastolic blood pressure percentiles. Both the systolic and diastolic blood pressures, in absolute values and peKentiles, were significantly correlated with
body mass index (p<0.001). However, the blood pressures of normal weight adoIescents also presented important changes.

Conclusion
Although excess weight was strongly associated with high blood pressure, normal weight adolescents were also affected, This study shows the importance of measuring adolescents’ blood pressure períodicaIIy to treat possible changes
early and promote healthier lifestyles.
