Abstract

Objective
This study used the heart rate variabiIity threshold to determine if aerobic training improved cardiorespiratory functional capacity.

Methods
This prospective, longitudinal study submitted 18 young, healthy, sedentary women aged 18 to 25 years to a maximal effort protocol on a treadmitl at an initial speed of 4.C)km/h at 0% grade, incrementing 1 .Okm/h/min until exhaustion
During the maximal effort protocol, the heart beats were recorded and the heart rate was later determined by software to determine the heart rate variability threshold. The heart rate variability threshold was given when the Poíncaré plot index standard deviation 1 of heart rate variability reached 3ms. The volunteers were then submitted to 12 aerobic training sessions of 40 minutes each (20 minutes on a treadmill and 20 minutes on a stationary bicycle), at an intensity of
65c’/, of their HR„., which had been determined during the maximal effort protocol. The maximal effort protocol was repeated after the aerobic training and the baseline and post-intervention heart rate variability thresholds were
compared by the Mann-Whitney test. The significance leveI was set at 5% (psC).05).

Results
The following medians obtained at the heart rate variability thresholds before and after the intervention were significantly different (pSO.05): heart rate per minute increased from 141 to 149,- oxygen consumption (VO ,ml/kg/min) increased
from 13.4 to 30.0; and treadmill speed increased from 6.0- km/h to 8.0 km/h

Conclusion
The use of a short-lasting aerobic training program effectívely improved the cardiovascular functional capacity of the volunteers, and the heart rate variability threshold successfully reflected the variation.
