Abstract

The estimated prevatence of psychiatric disorder, prescription of benzodiazepines and antidepressants and psychiatric referral by non–psychiatdc physicians was evatuated by means of a four part questionnaire. The results are comparable to other similar studies which indicate a tendency of non-psychiatric medical professionals to underestimate the prevalence of
psychiatric disorders in their patients. The estimated use of psychotropic medication is also compatible with other findings. The fourth part of the study, which investigated psychiatric referral rate according to symptoms and diagnoses, suggests difficulties in the selection of patients for referral to specialized services. The possible causes are discussed.
