Pain during labor
physiology and the role of epidural analgesia
Keywords:
abdominal pain , labor, analgesia, epiduralAbstract
This is a review on the intensity, frequency and physiological implications of pain during labor. The knowledge of the nociceplive pathways involved and their integration and modulation mechanisms. besides their respective reflex answers, are the phvsiological basis for the use of epidural analgesia for controlling pain during labor. Its benefits are not only concerned to maternal pain relief but also to several pathological conditions like pre-eclampsia, cardiopathy and chronic fetal hypoxemia, representing a safe choice. The epidural analgesia is a very dynamic procedure, suitable to be used in situations where the analgesic needs vary according to the phase of labor.
