VITAMIN A STATUSOF MOTHERSANO NEWBORN INFANTS ANO MATERNALANTHROPOMETRIC STATUS
Keywords:

The present study evaluated the vitamin A nutritional status of 170 mothers and their newborn infants attended in a public maternity hospital in Rio de Janeiro. The prevalence of inadequate levels of serum retinol (<1.05 umol/L) was of 20.0% in mothers and 57.1% in newborn infants (blood was collected from the umbilical cord). The vitamin A status of the mothers was associated with the vitamin A status of the children (x2=11.097; p<0.001; OR=4.5). However, the maternal anthropometric status at delivery and before pregnancy was not associated with the vitamin A status of the mothers and children. These oservations suggest strongly that the vitamin A status should receive special attention during prenatal care, to prevent VAD (vitamin A deficiency) and its consequences to the newborn infants.
