POLYTRAUMATISM IN CHILDREN: ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN CAUSES IN 10 YEARS OF INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

We analyzed 195 children between zero and 12 years old who were victims of accidents admitted to the Intensive Care Center of the Celso Pierro Hospital and Maternity Hospital, in Campinas, SP, from 1989 to 1999, and 76 cases were selected with a diagnosis of polytrauma. Causes and age range were related, with the main cause of polytrauma being being run over, followed by car accidents. Other causes verified were falls and Tank Syndrome, differing from local and national literature. Related aspects were studied and it was concluded that in the Intensive Care Center of the evaluated Hospital and in the southeast region of Campinas, accidents involving vehicles are the most frequent causes of polytrauma in children.
