THE ROLE OF BREAST SELF-EXAMINATION ANO MAMMOGRAPHY IN THE EARL Y D/AGNOSIS OF BREAST CANCER
Keywords:
breast neoplasms, prevention, breast self-examination, mommographyAbstract
Breast cancer is considered a public health problem in almost all countries. The devastating effect caused by this neoplasm has motivated the creation of health education programs in order to achieve an early diagnosis, when the chances of a cure are greater. This diagnosis is based on three procedures: breast self-examination, clinical examination and mammography. Most programs recommend, especially in populations where late diagnosis is the reality, the practice of self-examination as one of the ways to identify tumors early; however, scientific literature also points to the underuse of this procedure in women belonging to higher social classes. The mammography exam, although its real impact on reducing mortality from this neoplasia remains controversial, is the main weapon in diagnosing asymptomatic breast cancer.
Unfortunately, as it is a more sophisticated diagnostic method, it has left out a significant portion of the female population who do not have access to the procedure. The authors reviewed works that show the importance of breast self-examination and mammography, as well as their performance by women.
