Abstract

The simultaneous presence of two or more concepts constitutes multiple pregnancy, classified as double, triple, quadruple and successively. Although the occurrence of these events was relatively rare in the past, there is currently an increasing trend. popularization of assisted fertilization procedures, especially those with ovulation induction. Dizygotic or fraternal twins account for two-thirds of twin pregnancies. Monozygotic or identical twins represent a third of cases, arising from the fertilization of an egg by a sperm, creating a zygote that undergoes division at an early stage, resulting in two or more embryos, being of the same sex and of the same genotypes. Considering that perinatal morbidity and mortality is higher in twin pregnancies and that its frequency has increased, it was considered opportune to review aspects related to the diagnosis of the condition, as well as clinical assistance during pregnancy and childbirth, in addition to complications, their prevention and the corresponding therapeutic measures. The different delivery options are discussed according to the presentation of the first and second fetus, according to the most recently available scientific evidence.
