Abstract

Introduction

The literature attests to the importance of cognitive performance for healthy aging and confirms its close dependence on other areas of personal functioning. This study describes the experience of cognitive stimulation in elderly people, with attention to emotional aspects and quality of life.

Methods

12 volunteers aged between 60 and 70 years were selected, who underwent a neuropsychological and emotional assessment and a survey of quality of life aspects. The subjects underwent a program of specific exercises and discussions on topics about aging and cognitive functioning, in weekly group meetings, for a period of eight months.

Results

There was maintenance or small improvements in cognitive performance. Self-assessments showed an improvement in self-confidence and self-esteem, which is considered fundamental for preserving and generalizing the changes obtained.

Conclusion

The intervention model used seems productive for clinical work with the elderly.
