Abstract

Mucocele is a non-infectious lesion of traumatic origin that involves the salivary glands and their respective ducts. The phenomenon of mucus retention occurs when the main duct of an accessory salivary gland is severed or obstructed, preventing salivary flow, forming a cavity similar to a cyst. These lesions are generally painless and have a regular surface, with a bluish color. On histopathological examination, a circumscribed cavity surrounded by granulation tissue containing free mucin, as well as an infiltrate of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, lymphocytes and plasma cells, is observed. In general, the treatment of choice is surgical excision with removal of the accessory gland. The objective of this work is to expose, through the report of a clinical case, the etiology, pathogenesis and clinical characteristics of the mucocele lesion, thus being able to obtain a differential diagnosis, probable treatment and prognosis.
