Traumatic Retinal Angiopathy (Purtscher's Retinopathy)

The authors describe the case of a 40-year-old patient who presented with low vision in the right eye after compressive trauma to the chest. The ophthalmoscopic findings were characteristic of Purtscher's retinopathy, with cotton-wool exudates and hemorrhages in the posterior pole. Fluorescein angiography revealed choroidal fluorescence block, perivenous staining, as well as retinal and optic disc edema. Systemic steroid treatment did not improve vision. Although this case is rare, emergency physicians should be aware of it and the causes of low vision associated with extraocular trauma.
