Abstract

Objective
To report the results of surgical treatment by percutaneous intramedullary osteosynthesis with a single wire for fractures of the neck of the fifth metacarpal bone.
Methods
Seventeen patients with this type of fracture were treated surgically between March 1999 and August 2000 using the method of immediate percutaneous intramedullary fixation with a Kirschner wire, early mobilization, and removal of the wire after four weeks of fixation.

Results
The fractures progressed clinically and radiographically with consolidation without shortening, without joint stiffness or rotational or angular deformities. The functional and aesthetic results were considered satisfactory.
Conclusion
The percutaneous intramedullary fixation method proved to be a valid option in the treatment of these fractures, with results similar to those obtained with conservative treatment, but enabling early rehabilitation without residual deformities.
