Abstract

Objective

To understand the epidemiological profile of patients with fractures of the proximal femur treated at the Celso Pierro Hospital and Maternity Hospital, with the aim of creating prevention and treatment protocols.
Methods
Retrospective analysis of cases of fractures of the proximal femur in 40 elderly patients treated at the Celso Pierro Hospital and Maternity Hospital, between January 1999 and March 2000, with evaluation of the parameters: sex, age, topographic location of the injury, moment of surgical intervention, hospitalization period, associated systemic diseases and anesthetic risk.
Results
40 patients were examined, 32 females and eight males, with a mean age of 83.2 years (ranging from 66 to 95). The fractures were: eight in the femoral neck region, 30 transtrochanteric and two subtrochanteric. The length of stay until the surgical procedure was on average 4.5 days (ranging from 1 to 13 days). All patients had systemic diseases with different degrees of compensation, 20 were considered as ASA II (assessment of surgical risk according to the standards of the American Society of Anesthesiology), 19 as ASA III and one case as ASA 1.
Conclusion
There was a higher incidence of fractures in elderly women, with a predominance of transtrochanteric fractures. Furthermore, the incidence of associated systemic diseases and surgical risk were high. The waiting time for surgery was within the average found in the literature and the hospitalization period was shorter compared to that observed in other studies.
