ARGININE: BIOCHEMISTRY, PHYSIOLOGY, ANO THERAPEUTIC IMPLICACTIONS IN GASTROINTESTINAL CANCER PATIENTS

Recent advances in nutrition have focused on the pharmaco/ogic actions of individual amino acids and the organ-specific reactions to them. Arginine is a semi-essential amino acid which, used as a supplement by patients with gastrointestinal cancer, has been associated to beneficia/- effects in the immunological system, in time of survival, weight gain, and reduction of both, tumor growth and metastasis. The aim of this work was to perform a criticai ana!ysis of research studies, pub!ished in periodicals indexed in Medline, Li!acs and NCBI databases, which evaluated pharmacological and metabo!ic effects of arginine in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. The studies selected for this analysis were clinica/ researches of randomized, contro//ed, and double blind nature, followed by statistical treatment with significance of p<O. 05. The results of such ana/ysis suggest that, a/though the use of arginine has improved patients' prognosis, this amino acid's posology and dosage are not yet defined for patients with gastrointestinal cancer.
