Abstract

Objective

To describe results of hearing screenings in newborns hospitalized at the Neonatal Jntensive Care Unit, and the follow-up of the cases as outpatients at the lntermediate Care Unit, of the Center for Woman's Integral Health Care at Universidade Estadual de Campinas.

Methods

Automated Auditory Evoked Brainstem Response was performed in newborns from January to October, 2002. The newborns who presented a/tered conditions at the tests, were sent, for further eva/uation, to the Centro de Estudos e Pesquisa em Reabilitação Prof. Dr. Gabriel Porto. The followíng tests were performed for diagnosis: Behavior Hearing Screening, Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions, and Auditory Evoked Brainstem Response.

Results

Among 216 evaluated newborns, 26 presented altered hearing results: 11 (5%) of them, at 70dBNA in at least one ear; 15 (7%) of them, at 35dBNA and!or 40dBNA. From those 26 newborns with a/tered hearing, 14 (54%) were available for follow up tests, and seven of these were found to have severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. There was not any associatíon of the results with sex; adequacy of weight to gestational age; gestational age, and presence ar not of risk índicators.

Conclusion

The tests were abnormal in 12% (26/216) of the newborns. Jt's necessary to insist on carrying on the diagnosis process for ai/ newborns found with abnormal screening tests. For, in this study, the fol/ow-up rate for children who presented positive screening test, was 14/26 (54%), and the hearing loss diagnostic was confírmed for seven infants.
