Abstract

Premature rupture of membranes at term is a frequent condition in obstetric practice, but to this day there is controversy regarding the best management of this condition. This review presents a brief historical overview and a/so approaches etiologic factors involved in this condition. lts purpose ís to present possible management schedules for premature rupture of the membranes at term, reporting on obstetríc and perínatal outcomes assocíated wíth methods for labor índuction, includíng the use of prostaglandin, oxytocín or expectant management. Accordíng to data avaílable ín the scientífic líterature, the ímmedíate índuction of labor with misoprostol may reduce the rate of cesarean sectíon and maternal and neonatal ínfectíon. There is enough scientífic evídence to recommend thís practice for pregnant women with premature rupture of membranes at term.
