Abstract

Objective

Accompany the adaptation of lumbar spine curvature and trunk inclination during pregnancy and early postpartum.

Methods

Descriptive study using five pregnant women, free of diseases. The shape of the spine in ali its extension was represented by a continuous curve following the fine determined by the vertebral processes. The methodology is non invasive and based on the videogrametric three-dimensional reconstruction of markers adhered to the skin on the backs of the volunteers. The quantitative description of the shape of the curve was based on the concept of two-dimensional geometric curvature. Thus, a direct and detailed measurement of both variables: the curvature in the lumbar region and the inclination of the trunk, were obtained. Five measurements were taken, four at distinct moments during the pregnancy and the last one at eight weeks postpartum. Ali measurements were taken in the static position. The resu/ts for each volunteer were normalized in arder to partially neutralize the high inter- volunteer variabi/ity and emphasize the effect of pregnancy.

Results

The group of volunteers analyzed presented a significant increase in lumbar curvature and a significant posterior inclination of the trunk as pregnancy progressed. The postpartum values for both variables showed an irregular tendency to decline.

Conclusion

Lumbar /ordosis increased throughout pregnancy and decreased postpartum. The trunk inclined forward during pregnancy and backward postpartum.
