Abstract

Objective

The purpose of this study was to check the sacio demographic characteristics of women attended in a secondary reference health service and also their health district of origin in the Hospital e Maternidade Celso Pierro.

Method

676 women were interviewed while avvaiting their gynecological appointment. The variables analyzed were: age; school leve/; place of birth and of residence; health district of origin; house conditions; job and salary; marital status; with partner ar not; duration of partnership; school levei of partner and job; obstetric history and use of contraceptive methods. The first analysis was descriptive. The women were then divided into two groups according to age: up to 40 and over 40, in arder to look for evidence of gynecologica/ and obstetric characteristics. The odds ratio was calculated with a confidence interval of 95%.

Results

There 1s a prevalence of women and men with only 8 years of formal studies, 89.8% and 87.2% respectively Most of the women were white, had lived with their partner for at least six years, 71.0% received less than 5 minimum wages, 90.0% came from the city of Campinas and surrounding areas and 30.0% were salaried workers. 63.4% of the women came from their reference hea/th district and 15. 7% from the metropo!itan area.

Conclusion

The health service is shown to attend a low school levei, low-income population, !iving in the northwest and southwest regions of their reference health district ar the metropolitan area.
