Abstract

Objective

lnvestigate lumbar lordosis adaptations occurring during !ow speed treadmi/1 gait when using footwear with different heel heights.

Methods

During the experiment three women carried out six different triais each, one bare-footed and tive wearing footwear with different hee/ heights. ln each case sixteen strides were registered and the information grouped together to provide one typica/ gait cycle for analysis. The applied methodology is non-invasive and permits the tri-dimensional kinematical analysis of the movement of 35 to 40 surface markers attached to the skin of the volunteers along the virtual fine defined by the spinous processes of the vertebrae. The vertebral spine is represented by a continuous curve and ana!yzed using the 2-dimensional geometric curvature concept. The lumbar lordosis adaptations were measured in the sagittal plane during the gait cycle.

Results

The study verified a reduction in lumbar lordosis with increasing heel-height of the footwear used during gait. The reductions in the maximum and average lumbar curvatures were significant (p<0.05). The method used was shown to be efficient and sensitive and allowed for the quantification of the lumbar curve during movement with greater precision than that of traditional static methods.

Conclusion

lncreasing hee!-heights of the footwear used provoked a rectification effect on lumbar /ordosis during treadmi/1 gait.
