Abstract

Objective

To verify the re/ationship between autoimmune thyroiditis and papillary carcinoma of the thyroid in patients submitted to thyroidectomies between 1994 and 2003.

Methods

Eighty nine patients with papillary carcinoma were paired with 89 patients with co//oid goiter be/onging to the contrai group, randomized according to age and gender criteria. Ali patients were evaluated regarding an association with autoimmune thyroiditis.

Results

Of the 89 patients with papillary carcinoma, 17 (19. 1 %) presented autoimmune thyroiditis while the 89 patients in the contrai group, only 4 (4.5%) presented the inflammatory disease, evidencing a significant difference in the rate of thyroiditis in the cases of papillary cancer (x2= 9. 12; p=0.003).

Conclusion

The results of this study show a higher occurrence of inflammatory disease in patients with papillary carcinoma of the thyroid when compared with patients with colloid goiter This relationship indicates that new studies must be carried out to verify if the same stimuli that contribute to autoimmune thyroiditis can set off thyroid cancer.
