Abstract

The techno/ogica/ deve/opment has brought with it a surge of new clinica/ complications, which, nevertheless, can be prevented, mainly through interdisciplinary action. The bed-ridden, sedated patients, who are ventilation dependent and in need of regaining their respiratory functions, may be he/ped by the nurse and the physiotherapist, working together in arder to assure Jung ventilation and, therefore, oxygenation. One method of preventing further Jung problems is to perform respiratory physiotherapy. This bibliographical review focuses on and describes the consequences of the aspiration of oropharingeal residue, which is a predisposing factor for patients to develop aspiration pneumonia. The review also describes approaches in respiration physiotherapy, which can be used in arder to preserve the oxygen flow and lung ventilation, aiding in the patient's early recovery. This review preceded a research developed with this kind of patient, in which the physiotherapist's work was complementary to the care offered by the nursing staff.
