The author believes that Trypanosoma cruzi is the only cause of Chagas disease. Howeper, in chronic stage, many patients do not show parasites in the diseased myocardium. According to this, the author accepts the the01Y that an autoimmune mechanism is destroying the myocardium cells. Furthermore, also in chronic cases, with pery scanty parasites and disproportionate amount of myocardium fibers destroyed, the author admits both, direct parasitic aggression and autoimmune mechanism, acting together in the same heart.
